JAKARTA – Scientists reveal that the planet Uranus emits a stench exactly like that fart and rotten eggs. This finding stems from complaints from astronauts who returned from there.

Astronauts complained that the spacesuits they wore smelled bad, like burning flesh or gunpowder. Reporting from BGR, Thursday (18/1/2024), scientists then looked for this strange phenomenon.

Using an instrument called the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) at the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, astronomers finally found the answer. The foul smell that sticks to astronauts’ suits is because the clouds found on Uranus consist of hydrogen sulfide gas. This gas gives rotten eggs a distinctive and unpleasant odor.

But Uranus isn’t the only smelly place in space. Comets also have concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in their gaseous halo, along with ammonia and other molecules that emit unpleasant odors. Fortunately, there is also a high concentration of water vapor in it, so the odors are weak.

Some researchers also believe that Uranus it may smell like urine, as both Uranus and Neptune can have ammonia ice in their clouds, which would provide another foul aroma along with the smell of rotten eggs. Uranus is indeed a unique planet. But what is clear is that the place is very rotten.
