Uranium mining banned in Greenland

Already in its election campaign, the party strongly opposed the use of the deposit in the southern fjords of the island.

The project is led by a Chinese-owned Australian company that plans to start extracting radioactive uranium, as well as rare earths for laptop and smartphone batteries.

The use of the site would provide additional income, but 12 out of 21 members of the local parliament voted against.

Already in May this year, a French company abandoned similar plans.

The world’s largest island has significant reserves of mineral resources, but only two mines are currently used to extract titanium ore and sapphires.

CONTEXT:

The Greenland Government is also stopping the possible oil field exploration work off the coast of the world’s largest island, citing climate change, which could significantly change the landscape and ecosystem of this unique area in the future.
