BBC Finds Thousands of Users Sharing “Upskirting” Posts on Facebook
The English terms “upskirting” or “downblousing” mean when women are photographed unintentionally under their skirts or in their necklines. In its research, the BBC found “thousands” of users on Facebook who had distributed such “upskirting” material in groups. A Facebook user uploaded videos in a group of him stalking schoolgirls in New York and filming them up their skirts. The New York police have now started an investigation. Another man asked a Facebook group for tips on how best to take such footage without the victims noticing. According to the BBC, this post was not initially removed by Meta either.
“Upskirting” has been a criminal offense in Germany for two years
British Member of Parliament Jess Phillips (Labour Party), Shadow Secretary of State for Domestic Violence and Safeguards, told the BBC that the footage was not immediately removed from Facebook. She doesn’t understand how Facebook can think that the reported recordings don’t violate their community standards: “They work with abusers.”
Facebook itself issued a statement that sharing intimate photos without consent, as is the case with upskirting, is not permitted on Facebook. As a result of the BBC research, a large number of such groups and accounts have been removed and further measures have been taken to block the relevant hashtags.
