Upsets and Surprises at the US Open: Pegula and Jabur Suffer Defeats, Zabalenka on Track for World Number One

New York: Wimbledon finalist Uns Jabur and third seed Jessica Pegula made an early return to the US Open where the majors continue to lose their footing. Pegula, one of the leading contenders for the title, was defeated in straight sets by fellow countrywoman Madison Keys. Score 6-1, 6-3.

Jabur lost to China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-2 6-4. It is the first time the Chinese teenager has played a Grand Slam quarter. Their last eight clash will be against Arina Sabalenka. Men’s No. 1 seed Alcarez will face Alexander Zverev in the quarters. The German star Swarev defeated Janic Sinner in a five-set long fight and got the ticket to face the strong. Score: 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Daniil Medvedev, the third seed, defeated Australia’s Alex De Minor and reached the quarters.

Another Russian star, Andrei Rublev, will be the next opponent. Alcarez secured the quarters by defeating world number 61 Arnoldi.
