Upset with Russia, Germany coach resigns from Lokomotiv Moscow

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

German coach Markus Gisdol leaves the club Lokomotiv Moscow because he was disappointed with the attitude Russia which attacked Ukraine since last week.

Gisdol coached one of the famous clubs in Russia in October 2021. However, Gisdol’s career with the club nicknamed Loko did not last long after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Quoted from RT, Gisdol reasoned that he could not work in a country whose leader invaded another country. Gisdol’s departure was confirmed by Lokomotiv.

“For me, being a football coach is the best job in the world. But I can’t pursue my calling in a country whose leaders are responsible for the war of aggression in Europe,” said Gisdol.

“It is not in line with my values, which is why I resigned from my position as coach of Lokomotiv Moscow immediately,” Gisdol added.

Gisdol arrived at Lokomotiv after receiving an offer from Ralf Rangnick, the club’s former sporting director who now manages Manchester United. The 52-year-old coach became Lokomotiv’s coach replacing Marko Nikolic who was popular with the club’s supporters.

However, with the war going on between Russia and Ukraine, Markus Gisdol admitted that he was not calm in coaching and chose to resign.

“I can’t stand on the training ground in Moscow, coaching players, demanding professionalism and a few kilometers away orders are being given which brings great suffering to everyone,” Gisdol said.

“This is my personal decision and I firmly believe in it,” Gisdol continued.

After the departure of Markus Gisdol, Lokomotiv announced another German coach Marvin Compper as coach of the club for the next match, against Yenisey in the Russian Cup, Thursday (3/3) local time.
