Three young legionnaires from the 2nd foreign parachute regiment (2nd REP) of Calvi (in Haute-Corse) died in a road accident this Saturday morning.
The exact circumstances of the accident – which occurred around 5:40 a.m. in the town of Calvi, near Camp Raffali which houses the soldiers – are not yet known. The Bastia public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation, entrusted to the local territorial brigade of the Calvi gendarmerie.
A tree hit on the side
“A priori the speed is part of the causes of this accident”, however specified to AFP Arnaud Viornery, the public prosecutor of Bastia, indicating to wait for the results of the analyzes of the alcohol level of the victims.
The car occupied by the three men left the road before violently hitting a tree on the side. Numerous emergency services intervened on the spot to try to resuscitate the victims.
Since January, eleven people have lost their lives on the roads of Haute-Corse, for 278 accidents and 89 injuries. A balance sheet in “significant increase”, according to the authorities.
