Upper Austria. On January 1st, Upper Austria not only took over the chairmanship of the Austrian conference of state parliament presidents, but also, together with the German state Schleswig-Holstein, the chairmanship of the joint conference of the state presidents of the Austrian and German state parliaments, the South Tyrolean state parliament and the German-speaking community of Belgium.
“Despite the current exceptional global situation due to the Covid pandemic, I am pleased that Upper Austria has taken over the chairmanship of all German-speaking state parliaments. We will use this platform intensively for the exchange of experiences about Corona and also discuss the strengthening of democracy and political education, “said Upper Austria’s Landtag President Wolfgang Stanek.
Salzburg held the chair in the second half of 2020. “Despite the Covid restrictions, many important topics, such as political education in schools or the collection of ideas in conversation with Federal Minister Karoline Edtstadler on the further development of constitutional topics, could be discussed and processed. We will continue to discuss many topics at the conference of the state parliament presidents ”, thanks Stanek Salzburg’s state parliament president Brigitta Pallauf.
European conference on February 1st digital
The first event will be the European conference of the German-speaking state parliaments on February 1st. Due to the pandemic, this will be held digitally. “The two topics of the video conference are the future of Europe and strategies for the European economy and the European labor market during and after the pandemic. Dubravka Šuica, Vice-President of the European Commission, and EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn are available as discussion partners, ”explains Stanek.
The joint state parliament presidents’ conference is planned for the beginning of June in Linz. “I hope that we can hold this follow-up conference of all Austrian, German and South Tyrolean counterparts as well as the President of the German-speaking Community of Belgium in attendance”, Stanek looks hopefully into the future.
