The corona pandemic has fundamentally changed the strategy of film companies, and especially their attitude towards streaming services. Because cinemas in many countries have been closed for months, many producers have been forced to launch their films online. And they have also discovered the benefits of that.
Now that cinemas are open again in many countries, Disney, among others, is sticking to that brand new streaming strategy. Important film productions can therefore not only be seen in the hall, but also via streaming services. Because those attractive titles can be a lure for new (paying) subscribers.
Disney also chose to launch the long-awaited (and expensive) live-action remake of Mulan – albeit out of necessity – on Disney +, at a time when the cinemas were closed. As a result, the former three-month period between a classic cinema release and an online release is increasingly being discontinued. And Johansson’s lawyer is now making a point of that.
