Updates on Bulgaria’s Energy Sector and Proposed Changes to Recovery Plan

The past week was full of energetic events. After the hot topic surrounding the sale of the Belene NPP reactors, it became clear that the government is preparing a final proposal to the EC for changes to the recovery plan. It differs from the requirement of the National Assembly from the beginning of this year and has the potential to cause new tremors in the sector because it proposes the closure of 800 MW of coal-fired power and a 30 percent curtailment of thermal power plants in Maritza-East.

The Energy Committee in the Parliament voted for a moratorium on solar installations on the state lands of “Mini Maritsa-East”. The controversial decision may actually turn out to be a very logical conclusion. Also, the proposal of “Vazrazhdane” was accepted unanimously

What happened

The local government in the small Bulgarian municipality of Vetrino is trying to circumvent the Supreme Court’s decision to lift the moratorium on wind turbines. Which led to the investor CWP announcing that it would freeze the project on the territory of the municipality.

Bulgaria is very close to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and any accident would have an effect on the country. For this reason, we asked Capital what data was available regarding the escalation of the conflict in the headquarters area. The information is confusing because Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of preparing to sabotage the security of the nuclear plant, and the truth may not come out.
