FDA Revamps “Healthy” Food Label: New Rules Take Affect
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has considerably updated its criteria for the voluntary “healthy” label on food and beverage products, marking the most considerable change as 1994. These revised guidelines, effective February 2024, aim to better reflect current nutritional science and align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The updated criteria emphasize limiting saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars while encouraging the inclusion of foods from key dietary groups: fruits, vegetables, protein, and dairy. This shift reflects a growing understanding of the importance of balanced nutrition in preventing chronic diseases.
Notable additions to the list of foods that now qualify for the “healthy” claim include salmon, eggs, olive oil, nuts, and whole grains. Conversely, foods high in added sugars are no longer eligible. This change reflects a move towards prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods.

The FDA believes this clearer labeling will empower consumers, particularly those less familiar with nutritional information, to make healthier choices. The agency hopes the updated criteria will encourage manufacturers to reformulate their products to meet the new standards.

For example, cereals now need to meet specific whole-grain content and limits on saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars to qualify. Many budget-friendly options, such as certain peanut butters and canned fruits and vegetables, also meet the new criteria. Manufacturers have three years to comply but can adopt the new standards sooner.
In a related development, the FDA is exploring the creation of a standardized symbol to further simplify the identification of “healthy” products. This visual cue would complement the text-based label, making it even easier for consumers to navigate the grocery aisles and make informed choices.
