Refugees from the Azovstal steelworks arrive in Zaporizhzhia

The first few refugees from the besieged Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol will arrive in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday morning, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Sunday (1/5/2022) about 100 civilians were evacuated from the factory, the last stronghold for Ukrainian troops in the city.

Zelensky hopes that “all necessary conditions” will be met to allow evacuations to continue on Monday.

Nancy Pelosi visits Ukraine

The speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has been the highest-ranking US official to visit Ukraine since the outbreak of war, where she met with President Zelensky.

“If they make threats, you can’t back down,” Pelosi told a news conference.
