San José, October 16 (elmundo.cr) – The Ministry of Health updated the areas considered at risk of the spread of yellow fever, extending coverage to the entire territory of the countries included.
Previously, there were exceptions in risk zones within some countries. However, according to the new resolution, the entire area of the following countries is now considered a risk area:
- Bolivia
- Brazil
- Colombia
- Ecuador
- Guyana
- French Guiana
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Suriname
- Venezuela
- Trinidad and Tobago
In addition, countries in Africa have been added to the list of risk areas.
Mandatory vaccination
The yellow fever vaccine is mandatory for Costa Ricans and foreigners traveling to or from an at-risk country. This requirement is not new, but has been established since 2007.
The vaccine is not part of the compulsory vaccination scheme and must be purchased at private pharmacies. After the vaccination, a card will be issued at the Health Management Area Directorate.
Travelers who do not have a vaccination card cannot leave the country. Foreigners entering Costa Rica without the International Vaccination Certificate cannot enter the region either.
There are some contraindications for vaccination against yellow fever, such as:
- People under 9 months
- Severe egg allergy
- Immunosuppression
A transition period has been established until January 11, 2025 for people to take the necessary steps. During this time, travelers can still travel to risk areas without needing the vaccine. However, the Ministry of Health recommends getting the vaccine to prevent the disease.
