Update on new avian influenza outbreaks …

3.1. Afghanistan

On Afghanistan, the health authorities reported to the OIE on March 4 (report 30377) a GAHP home at virus A(H5N8) identified on February 7 in a farm of 22,000 broilers (794 had died) located in the district of Kushk north of the province of Herat. The survivors were euthanized.

The diagnosis was confirmed by RT-PCR by the Central Veterinary Diagnostic and Research Laboratory.

3.2. Japan

At Japan, the GAHP episode at virus A(H5N8) which began on November 4 (new 16622, 16882 and 16996) continues with 15 additional outbreaks reported since February 10 to the OIE, bringing the number of outbreaks in this episode to 65 (report 17174). These recent outbreaks were identified between January 12 and February 14.

Nine outbreaks have been identified in the prefecture of Chiba :

  • Six were located in the city of bland :
    • On January 23, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 5,400 ducks (chicks) (one was sick)
    • On February 3, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 176,500 laying hens (13 had died)
    • On February 7, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 256,000 laying hens (7 had died)
    • On February 10, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 79,000 laying hens (9 had died)
    • On February 10, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 278,000 laying hens (36 had died)
    • On February 14, an outbreak was identified in an outbreak of 39,000 chicks (6 had died)
  • An outbreak has been identified in the town of Yokoshibahikari on January 20 in a farm of 12,400 ducks (chicks) (2 were dead)
  • An outbreak has been identified in the town of Asahi February 5 in a farm of 420,000 laying hens (19 were dead)
  • An outbreak was identified in the city of Toko on February 6 in a farm of 1,150,000 laying hens (6 had died)

Two outbreaks have been identified in the town of Shintomi (prefecture of Miyazaki): an outbreak was identified on January 30 in a farm of 80,000 laying hens (5 were found affected, 4 of which died) and an outbreak was identified on February 2 in a farm of 240,000 laying hens (32 were found dead)

An outbreak was identified on January 12 in a farm of 34,000 broilers (1,000 died) located in the town of Satsuma (prefecture of Kagoshima)

An outbreak was identified on January 22 in a farm of 141,000 laying poultry (2 were found dead) located in the town ofOyabe (prefecture of Toyama)

An outbreak was identified on February 1 in a farm of 840,000 laying poultry (13 were found dead) located in the town of Shirosato (prefecture of Ibaraki)

An outbreak was identified on February 14 in a farm of 8,000 broilers (11 were found dead) located in the town of Mima (prefecture of Tokushima)

In all of this homes, the survivors were all euthanized.

3.3. Republic of Korea

On Republic of Korea, the GAHP episode at virus A(H5N8) which started on November 26 continues (see news 16772, 16804, 16882, 16914, 16944 and 16996 and 17039).
On February 18, 2021, the health authorities reported to the OIE (OIE report 17102) the occurrence of 10 additional outbreaks.

Province of Gyeonggi : 5 outbreaks were identified in laying hen farms:

  • An outbreak was identified on February 7 in a farm of 160,000 birds (69 had died) in Juwon-ri, in the town of Pocheon
  • An outbreak was identified as part of the surveillance on February 9 in a farm of 240,000 poultry located in Daesa-ri, in the town of Pyeongtaek
  • An outbreak was identified as part of the surveillance on February 9 in a farm of 119,000 poultry (100 had died) in Dorip-ri, in the town of Yeoju
  • An outbreak was identified as part of the surveillance on February 9 in a farm of 241,000 poultry (65 had died) in Gasan-ri, in the town of Icheon
  • An outbreak was identified as part of the surveillance on February 9 in a farm of 370,000 poultry (45 had died) in Dongo-ri, in the commune of Pyeongtaek

Province of Chungcheong du Nord : an outbreak was identified on February 9 as part of the surveillance in a 9,400 duck farm located in Boryong-ri, in the district of Eumseong.

Province of Jeolla du Nord : an outbreak was identified on February 9 as part of the surveillance in a farm of 14,700 ducks in Sasan-ri, in the district de Buan.

Province of South Jeolla : an outbreak was identified on February 11 as part of the surveillance in a farm of 12,000 ducks in Heungdeok-ri, in the Naju commune.

Province of Jeju : an outbreak was identified on February 12 as part of the surveillance in a farm of 5,550 ducks in Geumak-ri, in the commune of Jeju.

Province of Gyeongsang du Nord : an outbreak was identified on February 15 as part of the surveillance in a farm of 7,000 ducks in Homun-ri, in the town of Yeongju.

Virological diagnoses were confirmed by theAnimal and Plant Quarantine Agency. All surviving animals were euthanized.

3.4. Kuwait

At Kuwait, the health authorities reported to the OIE on March 12 (report 30568), as part of an immediate report, having identified on March 8 a GAHP outbreak in virus A(H5N8) in a farm of 7,000 breeding birds (1,900 died) located in Abdali, a border town with Iraq, in the governorate of Al jahrah.

This episode was enriched by 6 additional outbreaks reported to the OIE on March 31 (report 31437). These outbreaks are all located in Wafra, a locality in the south of the country of the governorate ofAl Ahmadi. They concerned six breeding poultry farms and were identified respectively on March 8 (272,763 poultry, 76,500 sick including 4,000 dead), March 13 (65,000 poultry, 3,400 sick including 180 dead), March 14 (95 680 poultry, 9,570 sick including 300 dead), March 17 (85,000 poultry, 18,000 sick including 250 dead), March 19 (120,000 poultry, 12,500 sick including 8,000 dead), March 19 (69,000 poultry, 14,600 sick including 8,400 dead),

The virological diagnosis was confirmed by RT-PCR by the Central Veterinary Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (National laboratory). All surviving animals were euthanized.

3.5. Nepal

At Nepal, the GAHP virus episode A (H5N8) who started on January 21, 2021 (see news 16996) continued with a second outbreak reported to the OIE on February 14 (report 28195).

This outbreak was discovered on January 31 in a farmyard of 2,820 ducks and chickens (1,357 were found dead) located in Tarkeshwor, in the district of Kathmandu, province of Bagmati.

The virological diagnosis was made by RRT-PCR by the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Tripureshwor (National Laboratory). All surviving birds were euthanized.

3.6. Taiwan

Taiwan, has been affected since 2019 by an episode of GAHP virus A (H5N5) (see news 16914). On March 25, the health authorities reported to the OIE (report 31204) have identified 2 new outbreaks. The first outbreak was identified on February 4 in a flock of 2,000 breeding geese (48 were dead) in the canton of Beidou (county of Changhua). The second was identified on February 9 in a farm of 14,800 indigenous chickens (806 had died) in Lunbei County (County of Yunlin).

Taiwan, has been affected since August 2020 by an episode of GAHP virus A(H5N2). On 25 March, a new outbreak was reported to the OIE (report 31175). It was identified on January 21 as part of the surveillance, in a farm of 500 broiler geese in the rural district of Alian, county of Kaohsiung.

The survivors were euthanized. The diagnoses were confirmed by RT-PCR and sequencing by Animal Health Research Institute (National laboratory).
