The key witness in the extensive liquidation process Marengo has legal assistance again after months. Onno de Jong, who put down the defense together with his colleague Peter Schouten in March, has again reported as a lawyer.
That has a well fed source to it ANP let them know. De Jong himself confirms the news.
The decision by De Jong and Schouten to put down B.’s defense came last March. Why they decided to do so has never been made clear. When asked, the lawyers said that they could not say anything about this because of their duty of confidentiality.
Meanwhile, Marengo’s criminal trial continued. The process is in its final phase. Crown witness Nabil B. still has the option of a final reaction (rejoinder) and last word.
At the end of the substantive treatment of his or her case, every suspect in a criminal case has the last chance to say something to the judges.
After two postponements, it is scheduled for September 22 in De Bunker in Amsterdam. B. will be there with his ‘new’ lawyer.
A decision will be made no later than early next year
The verdict in the five-year-long trial is scheduled for early next year at the latest. The fact that the date is still not known has everything to do with main suspect Ridouan Taghi.
He too was without lawyers for a long time. In June, Michael Ruperti, Arthur van der Biezen and Sjoerd van Berge Henegouwen announced that they would defend Taghi.
At the first hearing in the Marengo trial after taking office, they asked the court for a nine-month extension. They said they needed that time to be able to read up on the extensive criminal file.
The court rejected that request. The lawyers then announced that they would no longer participate in the Marengo trial for the time being. The consequences of this decision for the course of the lawsuit are unclear.
