Update: Gaza: Hamas Kills 14 Israeli Soldiers, Ceasefire Talks Underway with Mossad and CIA Chiefs

Gaza: Hamas has killed 14 Israeli soldiers in Gaza, which has been under siege by Israel for six months. Hamas claimed to have destroyed three tanks and injured several Israeli soldiers. However, Israel has so far confirmed the death of only four soldiers. The IDF has released their names. Two people were fatally wounded, the Times of Israel reported, citing the military. With this, according to Israel’s calculations, 604 soldiers died in the six-month ground war.

Soldiers were ambushed on Saturday by armed fighters who emerged through a tunnel from a building in Khan Yunis that had been demolished by Israeli forces. Hamas opened fire on a team patrolling the IDF’s logistics route. After the operation, the Israeli forces pursued the Hamas fighters who escaped into the tunnel, but they retreated when they noticed the Bubi trap (military trap) of Hamas.

Another attack carried out by Hamas in the same area destroyed a tank carrying Israeli soldiers. The army said no one was injured in the attack. The IDF also said two soldiers from the 46th Battalion of the 401st Brigade were seriously wounded in an attack on another tank in central Gaza.

Mossad, CIA chiefs in Egypt to discuss ceasefire

Meanwhile, CIA director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani have arrived for the ceasefire talks in Egypt. Hamas has repeatedly stated that it wants a complete ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of the occupying forces. Israel has also announced that it will participate in the ceasefire talks. A government official told the Israeli Broadcasting Authority after the cabinet meeting that the delegation would travel to Cairo. David Barnia, the head of the Mossad, and the head of the Shin Bet are also expected to be part of the ceasefire talks.

The United States has accused Hamas of refusing to release sick and vulnerable hostages as an obstacle to the deal. However, Qatar said that Israel’s position that the displaced Palestinians will not be allowed to return is an obstacle to the agreement.

At the same time, massive rallies were held in Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel demanding an agreement with Hamas to return the hostages. Tens of thousands of people participated in the protest.

Protest against Netanyahu is strong

Harsh slogans were raised against the Binyamin Netanyahu government, which could not release the hostages six months after the start of the war. Protesters also called the Minister of National Security and far-right leader Ben Guir a terrorist. Protesters and security forces clashed in Tel Aviv.

In the occupied West Bank, the Israeli army arrested 15 Palestinians from Hebron, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Jenin. A child, an ex-prisoner and a student were among those arrested. With this, the number of people arrested since October 7 has reached 8,100. Two Israelis were injured in the shooting near the town of An-Nabi Ilyas.

The death toll in Gaza so far has reached 33,175. 75,886 people were injured. More than 14,000 children and 9,220 women were killed in six months.

About 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon to the Golan. Hizbollah’s response came after Israel launched an attack on the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon yesterday.
