Update: Four Sacred Heart Nuns Released in Haiti, Two Still Held Captive

Port-au-Prince: Four Sacred Heart nuns and a teacher kidnapped from Haiti have been released. Two people who were abducted with them are still in the custody of the armed group. The religious organization Sacred Heart Congregation released the information about the release of five people.

Our prayers and pleas for release are not yet over, as brothers Pierre Isaac Valmeuse and Adam Montclaisson Marius are still incarcerated, the congregation added in a statement. On February 23, they were abducted by armed gangs on their way to school in downtown Port-au-Prince where they work. The congregation later informed that a ransom was demanded for their release.

Extortion has become the main business of criminal gangs that control large parts of the country and much of the capital. Recent incidents suggest that ransom attempts are behind the heists targeting monks and priests. And violence against the Christian community is increasing day by day in Haiti.

Last February 18, Bishop Pierre Andre Dumas of Anse-e-Vau Miragon was seriously injured in an explosion in Port-au-Prince. But no one has claimed the responsibility of this attack till now. Bishop is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Florida, USA. Hospital sources informed that there is improvement in the health condition.

Haiti is a country that has been plagued by armed conflicts and economic and social problems for the past few years. Insecurity, famine, poverty, looting and murder are common occurrences in the country due to unexpected violence. Kidnapping is a common occurrence in gang-ridden Haiti.
