Google is releasing a new update to Maps. You can find out what innovations users will now receive here.
The first users will have access to the new Google Maps timeline menu in their smartphone settings, like the online portal “Android Authority” has found out. This allows you to view your location history directly on your cell phone, export it or delete it. Because the location data is now stored locally on the Android and iOS devices instead of in the cloud as before.
The Timeline menu is located in Settings > Location > Location Services. However, the path to access location services settings may vary depending on the device.
In this context, Google has also taken measures to improve data protection. The group has shortened the storage period for location history. In addition, Google now offers the option of creating end-to-end encrypted cloud backups of location data.

When a user deletes their location history, all visits and routes stored on the device are deleted. However, it is possible that Timeline data is stored on other devices or in backup copies that also need to be deleted. However, if Location History remains enabled, new visits and routes will still be saved.
The new “Timeline” menu offers additional options: In addition to display and export, the user can turn the timeline on and off or change settings in the activity controls. Data export requires authentication and occurs in the form of a single JSON file. The new timeline menu is currently not available to all Google Maps users.
