Apple’s HomePod smart speakers turn out to be smarter than expected. The software update that the manufacturer rolled out this week appears to activate an integrated temperature and humidity sensor. The features are available on the new second-generation HomePod that came out in January, as well as existing HomePod mini models.
Once the HomePod’s operating system is updated to version 16.3, sensor readings will immediately appear in the Home app (available on iPhone, iPad, and computers running macOS). The sensors are not so much intended to know how hot, cold or humid it is in a room, but mainly serve to control other smart devices in the home. For example, you can use the HomePod as a second thermostat that turns the heating up a degree if it gets too cold in a room. If it gets too hot in a room, you could have the smart (roller) curtains operated by the HomePod.
The new HomePod with Siri speech technology, available in black or white, will be released on February 3 and has a target price of 349 euros. The existing HomePod mini is available in five colors and changes hands for 109 euros.
