Upcoming Peak in Grass Pollen Levels Predicted to Worsen Hay Fever Symptoms

With moist soil and dry, sunny days ahead, the grasses will bloom profusely in the near future. That is bad news for hay fever patients: from next week, the LUMC and the Elkerliek hospital expect a peak in the number of grass pollen.

The hospitals have seen little grass pollen in the air in the past two weeks. This involved about five tufts of grass or more per cubic meter of air. That will change in the coming weeks. Then that number can rise to several hundred pollen per cubic meter of air.

According to the hospitals, this peak period lasts from Wednesday 24 May to Saturday 1 July. Exactly how much pollen is released into the air depends on the precipitation. When it rains very hard, less pollen is released into the air. Last year, this meant that hay fever patients experienced relatively little discomfort.

Almost half of the people with hay fever complaints get those from grass pollen. The rest get complaints from tree pollen. We have already largely had that season, Weerplaza previously told NU.nl. Due to the changeable and cold weather, the grass clumps took a while to arrive.
