Upcoming Lane Closures on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway Cause Concern for Commuters

“That’s crazy, that’s crazy…”

It’s crazy, says trucker Avián Pacheco about the closure of different lanes on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway this weekend.

“It will be very complicated for me to drive to work,” Pacheco explained.

Meanwhile, workers in the area say the closure will affect many.

“It’s going to be complicated, because of the family plus transportation they have to take the Brooklyn Bridge from here, it’s not going to affect a lot of people,” said Luis Rodríguez.

The Department of Transportation will close Queens-bound lanes from Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street. Destined for Staten Island they will have a single lane between Sands Street and Atlantic Avenue. And they will close the Vine Street and Old Fulton Street ramp.

“Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the BQE during scheduled closures,” reads a social media message from the DOT.

The closures will be from 2 in the morning on Saturday until 4 in the morning on Monday. According to Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez, the priority is to install new concrete and steel bars in the sections of the road.

“This is the time to install the concrete that is needed for safety,” the commissioner said. “And the concrete needs time to dry and that is why it is so necessary for people who plan to drive in this area to understand that the BQE “It will be closed and we ask you to stay away from this place and preferably use public transportation.”

Some drivers say the roads in the area are very neglected and repairs are necessary.

“I agree that we have to close the roads to be able to fix the roads, right?” said Luis Carrasco.

We remind you that the closures on the BQE highway will be from this Saturday at 2 am until Monday, October 16 at 4 am.
