Day of the Dead
¡Bienvenidos! to the city of Santa Fe’s newest tradition on the Plaza, Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, a unique City of Santa Fe celebration. Said to have originated in Mexico, Día de los Muertos represents a time to honor and reconnect with loved ones in the spirit world in a truly beautiful and meaningful manner. Join us on the historic Santa Fe Plaza on Friday and Saturday and continue the experience on Sunday at the renowned Museum of International Folk Art. Santa Fe’s second annual Día de los Muertos opens at 4 p.m. on Friday with festive mariachi music and traditional entertainment on the Santa Fe Bandstand, festooned with papeles picados, the colorful cut paper decorations seen at celebrations throughout Mexico. Signature Mexican foods will be available as well as decorative items that customarily adorn ofrendas that honor those who have passed on. Expect to see brightly colored masks, decorative skulls, and hundreds of marigolds. Haunted House
Mescalero Tribal Fish Hatchery, 274 Trout Loop, presents: Psychotic Sanctum. Join them in the Fifth Annual Haunted House on both days from 7 p.m. to Midnight. Parking is limited. All profits will be used for the hatchery’s Christmas party. The hatchery primary goal is rearing trout to restock Native American reservation lakes, ponds and rivers, including propagating and reintroducing the native Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout to the upper reaches of the Rio Ruidoso. Halloweekend
The lively three-day Halloween celebration in Los Alamos — Halloweekend — returns, featuring nostalgic, small town Halloween charm, costumed children and families that will take to the streets on Friday for Trick-or-Treat on Main Street. From 4 to 6 p.m., local businesses give out candy surprises and spooky treats. On Saturday, the Trick-or-Trot 5K takes place at Barranca Mesa Elementary at 9 a.m., followed by fall and Halloween parties at Family Strengths Network and the Los Alamos Teen Center. A pumpkin glow and show is held on the Fuller Lodge lawn with a carving party, scavenger hunt and decorated pumpkins. Zoo Boo Fun Walk/Run
Alamogordo Parks and Recreation presents Zoo Boo Costume 5K and Kids’ Mile Fun Walk and Run at the zoo. Registration is now open and racers receive a Zoo Boo shirt. Native American Student Art Show and Sale
The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center presents: The 43rd Annual Native American Student Art Show and Sale. This year’s theme is, “Celebrating Our Pollinators.” This showcase will be held in the south gallery of the center, 2401 12th St. NW. IAIA’s Holiday Art Market and SFCC’s Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair
More than 100 of the finest artists and craftspeople from across New Mexico will be setting up shop at Santa Fe Community College’s (SFCC) Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair and Institute of American Indian Art’s (IAIA) Holiday Art Market on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Artists from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, Cochiti Pueblo, Santo Domingo Pueblo, Farmington, and other locations will participate in both events. Works for sale include jewelry, handbags and totes, woodcarvings, pottery, paintings, prints, photos, tinwork, handmade cards and ornaments. We encourage everyone to visit both campuses, which are only a six-minute drive or an 11-minute bike ride apart. SFCC’s Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair will be in the main hallway and campus center at 6401 Richards Ave. IAIA’s Holiday Art Market will be in the Performing Arts and Fitness Center at 83 Avan Nu Po Road.
