More than 460,000 citizens are entitled to vote. You can vote from the age of 16. In 2019, participation was 64.1 percent.
In the smallest federal state, Mayor Bovenschulte, SPD, governs with a coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party. In the last election, the SPD was not the strongest force for the first time in more than 70 years, but ended up second behind the CDU. The Free Democrats and the right-wing populist voters’ association Bürger in Anger are also represented in parliament. The AfD was not allowed to vote because the quarreling state association had submitted two competing lists of candidates.
Polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
