The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers of Córdoba criticizes and denounces the discouraging situation that olive farmers have faced in recent times, when it comes to contracting olive grove insurance: with low assigned yields and a high cost for contracting it.
In a press release, the agricultural organization points out that this phenomenon, apparently ignored by the Ministry of Agriculture, the competent authority, leads them to question the effectiveness and equity of insurance policies designed to protect farmers.
“At UPA we regret the disconnection between farmers’ expectations and the yields they receive. Generally speaking, the vast majority receive conditions far below reality in the field, guaranteeing only 50% of the harvest, with a compensation limit of 30%, and with a risk level of around 6. We understand that the The existing gap between the reality in the field and the allocation of insurance generates growing distrust in the system among olive growers,” remarked Miguel Cobos, general secretary of UPA Córdoba.
“At UPA we urge that the authorities urgently review and reform the agricultural insurance system for olive groves. Measures are needed to guarantee effectiveness and equity,” Cobos continued. In addition, the agricultural organization believes that insurance models must be updated to more accurately reflect the challenges that exist in agriculture, allowing farmers to face current risks with confidence.
In summary, UPA points out that the crisis of low yields assigned in olive grove insurance is a problem that can no longer be ignored. The sustainability and well-being of farmers depends on immediate action to rectify deficiencies in the system and ensure that agricultural insurance effectively fulfills its purpose of protecting a primary sector, which feeds our society.
