The court in Alkmaar on Friday imposed prison sentences of up to eight years on five men for a series of bomb attacks on Polish supermarkets. The attacks took place across the country in December and January 2021.
The judge spoke of “intimidating, excessive and brutal violence”. The Public Prosecution Service had demanded prison sentences of up to nine years.
Between December 8, 2020 and January 4, 2021, it hit five times at Polish supermarkets in Aalsmeer, Heeswijk-Dinther, Beverwijk (twice) and Tilburg. The explosions had a devastating effect and caused hundreds of thousands of euros in damage.
In Aalsmeer, the first explosion threw fragments of glass and wood up to 30 meters away. The facade was blown out of the building. A car went up in flames and a house above the store caught fire. The residents escaped unhurt.
Despite extensive investigations, the motive for the attacks has not become clear. None of the perpetrators has stated anything about possible clients.
