97% of renters in New York face severe difficulties finding a place to live, according to a survey by SpareRoom recently published.
Most of the nation’s metropolitan areas make it very difficult for renters to search for a new location due to demand versus supply, the report says.
SpareRoom surveyed 5,129 tenants through its application to determine how many are in the process of moving and how many are facing difficulties finding a place. 97% of New York City tenants surveyed responded that it has been a real ordeal.
Data shows that there are 3.9 people interested in each listing on SpareRoom, an increase of 156% year-over-year.
“Demand is high after 18 months of closures, restrictions and uncertainty,” said Matt Hutchinson, director of SpareRoom. “That coincides with the fact that people who moved home for quarantine are now starting to look for their own places again.”
But New York is not the city with the highest rental demand. In Miami there are 8.3 people interested in each ad in SpareRoom, an increase of 204% year-on-year. Other cities with great difficulties are Los Angeles and San Francisco / Bay Area, which increased to 98%, and San Diego, which reached 99%.
