Up to 46 degrees below zero on the thermometer with endless snowstorms

The United States has been in an “endless” blizzard since January 8, as the wave of arctic storms broke new record low temperatures.

In Portland, Oregon, coroners are investigating a death from hypothermia after a power outage sent hundreds of people into heated centers. Weather-related deaths have already been reported in California, Idaho, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen declared a state of emergency as about 1,700 miles of Nebraska highways were closed due to the heavy snowfall. State police assisted more than 400 stranded motorists.

Severe weather warnings were issued from New York to Louisiana.

The National Weather Service warned that the lowest temperature, minus 46 degrees Celsius, is expected in the Dakotas. In Montana the temperature was at minus 34 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning and at minus 26 degrees the cold reached in Iowa.

Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses remain without power, mainly in Michigan, Oregon and Wisconsin.

The “only place where snow was welcome” was in Michigan where Philip Spitzley woke up Friday to 95 little snowmen in his front yard, surprised by family members and neighbors for his 95th birthday.
