up to 40°C expected locally before degradation

The day this Sunday began under a sky that was often largely sunny, but it will not last… Météo France this morning issued two yellow heatwave and thunderstorm vigilance maps. We take stock.

Strong heat is expected in the southern half of the country, and in particular in seven departments -Drôme, Ardèche, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard, Vaucluse and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence- where the heat is increasing rapidly with peaks of 39°C or even 40°C in the afternoon. Tonight, “temperatures will be high, rarely dropping below 24°C in major cities, between Montpellier, Nîmes, Avignon and Marignane” warns the Weather Channel.

The mercury should not fall before Wednesday in these southeastern Mediterranean departments, with nights when the temperature will not drop below 23°C.

But that’s not all since the Drôme and the Ardèche are also on yellow storm alert this Sunday, as well as 20 other departments of France, ranging from the Pyrenees to the Doubs, via the Jura, the Côte- d’Or, Haute-Savoie, Isère, Ain, Rhône, Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Saône-et-Loire and even Haute-Loire.

This deterioration should take shape at the end of the afternoon and continue until midnight.

Monday, after a very mild morning, “the atmosphere will quickly become heavy with a new risk of thunderstorms from the central massif to the north of the Alps and the Jura”, according to The Weather Channel. “These thunderstorms are expected to be virulent again locally, only evacuating towards Italy and Switzerland after 7 p.m.
