Up to -20 degrees! Today’s coldest night of the year :: wetter.at

The night is mostly clear and frosty. The last remaining clouds in the north are also gradually dissolving. The wind is decreasing everywhere, the southerly wind only freshen up in the early morning hours in exposed, higher altitudes. Lowest temperatures usually minus 10 to minus 3 degrees, in snow-covered valleys down to minus 17 degrees or more are possible.

How cold it gets in some regions today is also shown by the temperature in St. Jakob, in Defereggental: There it was already minus 14 degrees at 4 p.m. – and the temperature will drop significantly. Tomorrow morning it will be “warmest” in the Lake Constance region and in the city of Vienna at minus 5 degrees.

Heavy snowfall expected in the south from Monday

Heavy snowfall is expected again in southern Austria at the beginning of the coming week. As the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) reported on Stefanitag, on Monday and Tuesday in East Tyrol and Carinthia, between 20 and 60 centimeters of fresh snow will fall in many regions. However, the precipitation is not as heavy as in early December, according to the ZAMG.

A low pressure area over northern Italy brings the heavy snowfall. “On Monday it snows heavily in Carinthia and East Tyrol. In low areas, rain is sometimes possible, especially in Lower Carinthia,” says Michael Tiefgraber from ZAMG. “On Tuesday it continues to snow and rain, but not as heavily. Overall, between 20 and 60 centimeters of fresh snow comes together from Monday to Tuesday in the lowlands of Carinthia and East Tyrol. Up to 60 centimeters can be expected, especially in the Lesachtal and Gailtal valleys. On the Carnic Alps and the Karawanken it snows around 80 centimeters in places. “

In parts of Salzburg, North Tyrol and Styria, you have to expect a few centimeters of fresh snow at the beginning of the week. In addition, on Mondays and Tuesdays, strong to stormy southern foehn blows in the mountains, which can also affect low altitudes. Gusts of over 100 km / h are to be expected in exposed summit locations. On Wednesday the weather will be much calmer in all of Austria.
