Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A mob of employees at a factory in eastern Pakistan reportedly tortured and burned a manager from Sri Lanka. The incident took place last weekend in the Sialkot region, the region’s industrial heartland.
The manager was accused of blaspheming religion. He is said to have torn down posters containing Islamic holy verses, the Koran and angered workers.
“The factory workers tortured the manager,” said provincial government spokesman Hassan Khawar, quoted by Reuters, Sunday (5/12/2021).
“A total of 50 people have so far been identified and arrested.”
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the move. He called it a disgrace to Pakistan.
“The horrific vigilante attack on a factory in Sialkot and the burning alive of the Sri Lankan manager is a shameful day for Pakistan,” he said in a message on Twitter.
It promised to directly oversee the research. He insisted the guilty would surely be punished.
Blasphemy itself is punishable by death in Pakistan. But vigilante action is common in Pakistan.
The killings came weeks after days of mass protests against what he deemed blasphemy against Islam. The violent protest was carried out by the radical Tehrik-e-Labaik Pakistan, a Sunni Muslim group founded in 2015.
Tahir Ashrafi, Khan’s adviser for Interfaith Harmony, condemned the killers in a recorded video statement shared on social media. “This is a barbaric act and against the teachings of Islam,” he said.
