The traveling exhibition entitled ” Exhibitionism “Launched in London in 2016 changes its name, becomes” Unzipped »In a nod to the cover of Sticky Fingers and put down his suitcases in the emblematic city of Marseille from June 10 to September 5. An unmissable exhibition for all fans and the curious.
While we have been deprived of culture and concerts for a year, here is a piece of news that will bring smiles to the fans! The rumor was spreading, and the press conference, happily called “Marseille is Stones” held on Thursday April 15th confirmed it! An exhibition-event will celebrate the legendary group of Rolling Stones at the Stade Vélodrome, temple of football … and rock with concerts by Madonna, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, AC / DC and inevitably the Rolling Stones! The group had performed in the beautiful city of Marseille, in 1966, 1990, 2003 and in June 2018 on the occasion of their last concert in France.
Immersion in the heart of the Rolling Stones
Live from the Orange Vélodrome, “Temple de Marseille”, on the occasion of an online press conference, Philippe Maneuver, rock journalist, fan of the Stones, and sponsor of the exhibition, and Martin d’Argenlieu, Director of the Grands Projets Olympique de Marseille announced an immersive exhibition and a ” initiatory journey »Significantly revised since its presentation in London and New York. ” It will be different, it has been redesigned »Underlined Philippe Maneuver.
The exhibition will retrace through more than 400 artefacts (costumes, stage sets, musical instruments, handwritten lyrics, posters, visuals, original record covers) the incredible history of this mythical group founded in 1962. Thirteen rooms will be occupied by the exhibition which will cover no less than 2000 square meters, completely redecorated and refurbished. The public will be able to stroll through these spaces to discover the universe of the Rolling Stones.
A show will be entirely devoted to variations of the famous and essential logo ” tongue and lips », Signature of the group since the 1970s, designed by John Pasche, a young English designer for 50 pounds sterling.
Life-size reconstructions
The expo features iconic sets: the miserable apartment Jagger, Richards, and Jones shared when they debuted on Edith Grove has been reproduced in life size from archival photos and group memorabilia. Spectators will be able to walk through the apartment and discover the birthplace of the Rolling Stones, where “They learn the basics of the blues and get excited ”. « They will build there, their myths, their songs, everything happens in this little apartment »Says Philippe Maneuver.
Fans will also be able to enjoy London’s Olympic Studio, where the band recorded many of their classics and where Jean Luc Godard filmed them during the premiere of ” Sympathy for the Devil ». Visitors will be able to appreciate from the control panel, the original instruments of the group and the archival images of Godard.
The visit ends with an immersion in the group’s legendary concert in Havana, Cuba, in front of two million spectators. ” When you get out of there, you feel even closer to the Stones ”, assures Philippe Maneuver.
“Marseille is Stones” forever and ever
The Rolling Stones and Marseille is a story that is made to last although it started off in bad omen. « They chose Marseille for the exhibition because Marseille is a rebellious city ”, underlined Martin d’Argenlieu. And for good reason !
During their first concert in the city in March 1966, at the Salle Vallier, Jagger was for the first time injured on stage by a spectator who throws his chair in his face, recalls Philippe Maneuver. “I met the young man who launched this chair in Marseille during a signing session, He said in front of a petrified room: “I would like to say that it was a purely enthusiastic gesture (laughs), I didn’t want to stop the concert” ”The concert has become legendary. ” Jagger, the brow bone in blood, was taken to hospital by Jean Sarrus, future Charlots, who was at the time in the group The problems », Continued the journalist. But the charm worked. The Rolling Stones returned in concert in Marseille in 1990, 2003 and 2018.
Mick Jagger, in a short video message, via videoconference promised ” You will love “. And the organizers did not rule out the possibility of a surprise visit by the members of the group. “We are never safe from a Rolling Stones coming to Marseille”, slipped Philippe Maneuver. Promising.
In order to comply with health protocols, and to limit crowds, booking slots have been planned so that the number of visitors does not exceed 200 visitors per session. The exhibition will be open seven days a week, with evenings on Fridays. The organizers hope to welcome 200,000 fans.
