Unveiling the Truth: Tears of the Kingdom and Elden Ring – Coincidence or Inspiration

Nintendo’s highly-anticipated game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has been drawing comparisons to FromSoftware’s Elden Ring due to a massive area in Hyrule. However, in a recent interview with Dutch news site RTL Nieuws, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that they haven’t had the chance to play Elden Ring.

Fujibayashi explained that the team was too occupied with the development of Tears of the Kingdom to play other games. While they had heard about Elden Ring, they did not have the opportunity to experience it firsthand. This admission may come as a surprise to some, considering the similarities between the two games’ expansive areas.

The area in question, known as The Depths, is an entire underground map in Tears of the Kingdom that is the same size as the surface of Hyrule. It features stronger monsters and a dark atmosphere, which has led to comparisons with Elden Ring. However, Fujibayashi emphasized that even if they had the time to play games, they would not reuse ideas from them. The team prefers to come up with their own concepts and build on them.

Aonuma chimed in, acknowledging that there are situations where games may have similarities, but he would never intentionally incorporate ideas from others into his games. He values originality and is always looking for new ideas. He shared a specific moment when he showed the former president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, a feature in A Link Between Worlds that surprised him with its possibilities.

Creativity and originality are at the heart of Nintendo’s development, particularly with the Zelda series. Many game developers have been impressed by Tears of the Kingdom’s mechanics, such as Recall and Ultrahand, and the numerous possibilities they offer.

The interview with Fujibayashi and Aonuma sheds light on the development process behind Tears of the Kingdom and dispels any notions of direct inspiration from Elden Ring. Whether players have noticed similarities between the two games is a question that remains open for discussion.

What are your thoughts on Fujibayashi and Aonuma’s comments? Have you played both Elden Ring and Tears of the Kingdom and noticed any similarities? Let us know in the comments.

Nintendo’s highly-anticipated game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has been the subject of comparisons to FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, primarily due to its massive area in Hyrule. However, in a recent interview with Dutch news site RTL Nieuws, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma revealed an interesting tidbit – they haven’t actually had the chance to play Elden Ring.

Fujibayashi explained that the development team was so engrossed in creating Tears of the Kingdom that they simply didn’t have time to delve into other games. While they had certainly heard about Elden Ring, experiencing it firsthand wasn’t in the cards for them. This revelation may come as a surprise to some, given the undeniable similarities between the two games’ expansive areas.

One particular area in Tears of the Kingdom, known as The Depths, has raised eyebrows due to its sheer size, spanning an underground map equivalent in scale to the surface of Hyrule. The presence of stronger monsters and a dark atmosphere has prompted comparisons to Elden Ring. Nonetheless, Fujibayashi was quick to emphasize that even if they had spare time to play games, they would never borrow ideas from them. The team prides itself on generating fresh concepts and building upon them.

Aonuma chimed in, acknowledging that there may indeed be situations where games exhibit similarities, yet he vehemently asserted that he would never deliberately incorporate ideas from other games into his own creations. Originality is of utmost importance to him, and he ardently seeks out novel ideas. He even recounted a specific instance when he showcased a feature in A Link Between Worlds to the former president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, and was astounded by the possibilities it presented.

At its core, Nintendo’s development philosophy thrives on creativity and originality, particularly within the Zelda series. Many game developers have marveled at Tears of the Kingdom’s innovative mechanics, such as Recall and Ultrahand, and the multitude of possibilities they offer.

This interview with Fujibayashi and Aonuma significantly illuminates the development process behind Tears of the Kingdom, debunking any notions of direct inspiration from Elden Ring. Whether players have picked up on similarities between the two games is an open question, one that remains ripe for discussion.
