Unveiling the Truth: Did Norse Fimbul Winter from Folklore Really Occur? New Study Links Ancient Climate Event to Violent Natural Disasters

The story from Norse folklore about the fimbul winter, a three-year winter without summers, may be based on fact.

A new study by the National Museum of Denmark shows that Denmark was hit by an extremely violent natural phenomenon 1,500 years ago.

The researchers analyzed 104 pieces of oak from the 6th century, all of which showed abnormal growth between 539 and 541.

“We can see from the growth rings in the forest that a very intense climatic event took place in 539, when growing conditions deteriorated significantly because it was much cooler,” says senior researcher Morten Fischer Mortensen .

Series volcanic eruptions in both Central America and Iceland at that time, large parts of the earth were covered with ash and sulfur gases.
