A British traveler tells an unusual experience while on vacation in Japan. He didn’t expect that there was a tradition of bathing naked in a public bath.
The tourist is Michael Hum. He recounted his experience in cyber media Mirror.
In the first sentence of his travelogue he was already stunned by the mix of modernity and ancient heritage in Osaka. Also, the smell of food in a row of street food.
“Previously, our taxi driver had rolled down the rain-soaked streets of Osaka, with high-end fashion boutiques,” said Michael.
“To get out of the rain, we popped into a small restaurant called Okonomiyaki. We had a dinner of octopus fried noodles, plus grilled pork placed inside an omelet sizzling hot on our plates,” she adds.
He also mentioned enjoying sake at the restaurant.
The next day, he took the two-hour train ride to Kinosaki Onsen.
“This is the best example of a city-state that has managed to maintain its traditional values. If you’re looking for a place that’s relaxed and peaceful and out of your comfort zone, this is it,” said Michael.
Onsen refers to hot springs. Here visitors will be asked to wear yukata and clogs. So, when entering the bath, a traveler must take off his yukata and footwear.
“That is, a traveler must be completely naked when dipping in this hot water,” he said.
Although initially awkward, Michael tried to relax. Moreover, after he learned the benefits of being naked in the hot water.
“He said, soaking in the onsen can be for spiritual and physical healing, with 42 degrees Celsius water, it also clears and focuses the mind,” he said.
