Unveiling the Multiple Functions of Mitochondria in Plant Cells

The function of mitochondria in plant cells is related to the respiration process. As plant cell organelles, mitochondria have an outer and inner membrane. These living creatures also have many other equally important functions.

If we observe plants further we will find various interesting things. One of them is in the cell section which has each special task. Interrelated and have a goal to continue to survive and grow.

Functions of Mitochondria in Plant Cells Apart from Respiration

In general, people know that mitochondria are the place for plant respiration. This process helps to produce energy, store glucose and the Krebs cycle. But it doesn’t stop here, several other functions are also important. The following are some of these other functions.

Produce Energy in the Form of ATP

The first role is to form ATP energy. This type of carbohydrate metabolism then enters the mitochondria. The pyruvate transport process undergoes oxidation from O2 to CO2 and water. This energy yield is considered efficient because there are around 30 ATP compounds in the production.

Remember that each glucose molecule that has been oxidized and glycolysis can produce 2 ATP. Famous as the energy generation of oxidative phosphorylation. The process is not just one but can reach five enzymatic reaction stages in the formation of ATP energy.

Ammonia Detoxification

The next function of mitochondria in plant cells is the detoxification process. This process occurs due to enzymes and mitochondria in the cell. So that later the detoxification process will take place smoothly.

This kind of process often occurs in various cases. Not only in plants, but in animals and humans. All living creatures can experience it and systems adapt to each other’s conditions.

Role in Apoptosis

Furthermore, it helps the process of apoptosis, a type of automatic programmed cell death. Its use in multicellular organisms helps remove cells that are no longer needed. This biological mechanism is assisted effectively by mitochondria.

Regulates Plant Cell Metabolism

The function of mitochondria in plant cells also helps in regulating metabolic activities. Similar to the formation of ATP energy which we discussed above, when pyruvate and oxidation occur. Then it becomes O2 which turns into CO2 and water.

Pyruvate itself is the most important chemical compound in biochemistry. The results of glucose metabolism come from compounds that break down into two pyruvic acid molecules. Then it is formed into energy in the plant cells.

This biochemical process which has a complex sequence in every living creature is metabolism. The goal is to convert food or food sources into energy. Energy needs are not only for the body to continue to grow and develop but also for cells to work as they should.

Maintaining Calcium Ion Concentration

This next important function is to maintain calcium ions. So that the concentration is able to meet the needs of various existing cell compartments.

Cells will be helped a lot by having a storage tank like this. Calcium ions will be stored and can be used as needed.

Eukaryotic Cell Free Unit

The function of mitochondria in plant cells is related to the free units of eukaryotic cells. This cell has a nuclear membrane or sen endomembrane that limits the membrane system.

Relating to the regulation of chemical energy needed in the process of food oxidation from the inside of the membrane.

Receive Enzyme Results

Finally, there is a function that aims to receive enzyme results. This kind of process is related to special molecules that mix with oxygen for good cell distribution. So that plants get enzymes evenly and can grow optimally.

Mitochondria in Various Cells of Living Creatures

Not only functioning in plant cells, mitochondria play an active role in animal and human cells. It is likely that various living creatures rely on it for similar needs. However, it has different parts.

Starting from where the respiration process takes place, cell energy generation to the detox process for the death of various cells. That’s why we can find it in every living creature.
