To draw positive attention to people with dementia and to increase awareness of the disease, the Forget-Me-Not-Pad was opened on Wednesday afternoon for Het Gasthuis on Haspelweg in Deurne.
Alderman Riny van Rinsum, together with Petro Klompen, Oswald Verleg and a resident of the nursing home, unveiled the path with tiles depicting forget-me-nots. These flowers symbolize the disease dementia.
Dementia friendly
The initiative to build the Forget-Me-Not-Path was taken by The Guests House. The municipality of Deurne supports these kinds of ideas and is working with local parties to make Deurne dementia-friendly. “If people have more knowledge about dementia, a place will be created where people with dementia feel safe,” says the municipality.
The Guest House in Deurne opened its doors in October 2021 and has since provided a home for more than twenty residents with dementia. Care couple Oswald Verleg and Petro Klompen started the care home partly because of their own experience with Oswald’s mother suffering from dementia.
own mother
The two guided her completely, but they noticed that the care unfortunately sometimes fell short. “What you would have given to your own mother, we now find that back in the basic principles of The Guests House. Giving people a good and pleasant place, paying attention to them, creating at least one special moment every day. Making a dance, baking a nice apple pie, playing a game together or just a loving touch,” say Oswald and Petro.
