Perhaps Saab’s most secret sports car project comes today when we get access to the until now hidden photos of Nev’s design office at the old Saab factory in Trollhättan. A few photos from 1998 are all that remain.
– We had a great need to do something, commented the then design manager Einar Hareide 25 years later. Get to play a little. It was frustrating when basically none of what we drew was put into production. Everything was a struggle to get through. That was a lot why I quit in 1999, right after we made the sports car.
The project was carried out undercover at the consultancy firm Formtech in Gothenburg. Saab’s management knew nothing.
– It was a few months of pure skunk work. A full-scale clay model and 3D sketches of the interior. A straight shot, a bit retro in a way, says Einar Hareide. I think we’ll call it Sonnet from now on!
In the new Saab Cars Magazine we tell you more – and in the latest episode of Studio Klassiker!
