Unveiling of the Municipal Art Collection: Paintings of the City of Bron and Maurice Utrillo’s Church Painting Event

By presenting this event, the elected official was able to announce that the 70 works of art, property of the municipality, following legacies or donations, would be unveiled gradually over the next three years.

“Like our common heritage that deserves to be valued. The whole of the City’s collection has been estimated at just over €25,000.

Paintings of the city of Bron

A large part of these works – watercolors, drawings, paintings, engravings – come from the Pestourie bequest, a passionate collector, who was also an elected official of the town. You can admire in particular a pencil drawing by Auguste Ravier, a large oil landscape by Georges Manillier or a lithograph by Truphémus, of which Roger Pestourie was a fervent admirer. A whole wall is also devoted to paintings by Jean Martin who has greatly represented the city of Bron.

A watercolor by René Bord, a famous engraver from Lyon, will be present until June 20, then the public will be able to find it in the APA exhibition which will be dedicated to him at the Maison des arts. The entire municipal collection has been kept in boxes specially made by the City’s technical services. They have been inventoried, appraised and restored, if necessary, by specialists for an amount of €1,100.

Like the Lyon workshop “Les Baguettes Magiques” which notably changed the glasses of the works on paper in order to protect them from UV rays.

In the spotlight, alone on a large white wall, Maurice Utrillo’s painting plays the divas, visible as soon as you enter the media library. This is one of its rare outings, thanks to the partnership between the City and the Bullukian Foundation, its owner. Around this new appointment, several “general public” events are organized.

Events:

Tuesday 30 may at 18 hours : conference on Maurice Utrillo in Rhône-Alpes with Michel Pittiglio, president of the Maurice Utrillo association.

Saturday 3 June of 9 at 13 hours : meeting of amateur painters. Place Curial will rediscover the atmosphere of the Montmartre hill at the time of Utrillo, with the sole subject of the Saint-Denis de Bron church.

To your brushes, with the artist Sylvie Samy. All pictorial techniques are allowed, everyone brings their own material. Chairs and tables will be on site. Exhibition of works at the Jean-Prévost media library from July 18 to September 2.

“The Church of Bron”, a painting by Utrillo found in 2009

In 2009, the Dauphi-Bron association and Mme Queyranne, elected to culture, spotted in an international sale, a painting by Maurice Utrillo of which we had lost track. Acquired for €25,000 by the Bullukian Foundation, the work eventually returned to its region of origin.

When he painted the church of Bron, the artist alone and sick, lived in Anse and made regular stays in the psychiatric hospital of Vinatier. Legend has it that after an alcoholic night, he asked for baptism at the Saint-Denis church. Painted in June 1933, the small gouache on paper (56 X 38.2 cm) represents the church of Bron under the snow. It is dedicated by the artist: “Respectfully to Father Bezonnier”.

This time lag between winter and summer confirms that the painter, passionate about humble monuments and old stones, usually painted from postcards.
