ENGLAND – Recent research identifies unusual symptoms of high blood sugar levels. The high blood glucose that bothers people with diabetes has long been linked to problems in the legs and feet, including diabetic neuropathy, which is a type of nerve damage that can occur in the hands, feet or other parts of the body.
Diabetes is also associated with muscle and bone problems in the upper body. However, new research conducted by scientists at the University of Exeter, UK, has now identified other painful symptoms that are directly caused by high blood sugar. Scroll for more information.
The research team revealed a variety of symptoms, ranging from shoulders that feel numb or stiff to wrist pain, which could also point to diabetes. The researchers came to this conclusion by looking at data from 370 thousand participants involved in the UK Biobank study.
Their findings revealed that people who had a higher chance of developing uncontrolled high blood sugar, known as hyperglycemia, were also more likely to experience 4 problems in the upper extremities. The following are new signs or symptoms that could be a warning of diabetes, quoted ExpressTuesday 23 January 2024.
1. Numb shoulders (the connective tissue in your joint thickens, causing stiffness and discomfort)
2. Carpal tunnel syndrome (nerve trapped in the wrist causing numbness and tingling).
3. Dupuytren’s contracture (connective tissue in the hand thickens and tightens, causing the fingers to bend inward)
4. Trigger finger (a condition similar to Dupuytren’s contracture which only affects one finger).
The research results also show that over time high blood sugar increases levels of substances in the body called advanced glycation endings (AGEs), which are formed when proteins, fats and DNA mix with sugar in the bloodstream.
The buildup of AGEs found in the hands of Dupuytren’s sufferers and in the shoulders of numb shoulder sufferers can cause damage and thickening of tendons, joints and connective tissue.

Research leader, Dr Harry Green from the University of Exeter Medical School, said this consistent research shows that long-term high blood sugar levels cause this upper extremity condition.
“We can now classify it as a complication of diabetes. Doctors treating diabetes patients must be aware of this complication in the clinic, so they can advise on the best treatment path,” he said.
