Unusual Natural Gas Flow from Borewell in Alappuzha Raises Concern

Alappuzha ∙ Flow of natural gas from a newly constructed borewell for domestic use. Tondankulangara Punnakkal near Victor Indira Junction, natural gas is flowing strongly from a borehole sunk in a newly constructed house. The events started at 6.30 pm on Friday. The gas started flowing when it reached a depth of 17 meters.

Gas instead of water came out of the pipe when the pump used the motor to draw the water. An odorless gas was forced out through the pipe. Suspicious, the workers lit a fire and it ignited. The fire brigade then reached the spot and put out the fire and temporarily closed the tube well with a valve. Assistant geologists VT Sheenamol, K. Sreejith and Mineral Revenue Inspector S. Priya from the Department of Mining and Geology visited the incident site and asked the family members about the matter.

Assistant Geologist V. T. Sheenamol said that this happens in normal marshy areas and the reason behind this is that the waste decomposes and turns into gas. They stated that the ground water department has been informed and only after they come and check it will be clear about the gas and its quantity.

Experts say that it is not uncommon for burning gas to come out from inside the boreholes and this has happened in some places in the district before and this phenomenon will end in a few weeks.

Gases formed underground millions of years ago come out like this. In 2011, this happened at Ramesan’s house in Karthika, Alappuzha Arattuwayi. Households still use this gas for cooking by connecting the tube well to the stove. Ratnamma, Ramesan’s wife, said that since November 7, 2011, they have been using gas from the borewell and the gas has never stopped.
