INSEE published at the beginning of the summer extensive statistics on the first names given since the 1900s. Toulouse news focused on just over 20 years, between 2000 and 2022 and only in Haute Garonne.
And a few first names emerge, which have had to do with current events, music or cinema stars and even fictional characters… A short, non-exhaustive overview of these unusual first names !
Note, however
INSEE only counts a first name if it has been given three times in the same year. It is therefore possible that a first name given here was given to other children, other years, but that the latter were not listed in the statistics.
Mohamed-Ali, Zinedine (and Zidane!), Cristiano, sports stars
Among the first names that catch the eye quite quickly, there are those of athletes. First and unavoidable, 14 children were called Zinedine since 2001. First after being crowned European champion in 2001 and 2002, then in 2006, the year of the World Cup, and the lost final. That year, and without any possible ambiguity, three boys were also called Zidane, quite simply !
Always sporty, we note twelve Mohamed Ali, born in Haute-Garonne between 2011 and 2021. Finally, four children were named Cristiano in 2007, possibly in reference to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was then exploding on the European scene.
Daenerys, Hermione and Zelda, la fiction s’invite
The end of the series Game Of Thrones didn’t you like it? Well imagine what the parents of the three girls born in 2018 (a year before the last season) who had chosen the first name thought. Daenerys, in reference to one of the characters of the series. Same series, different atmosphere, 65 young girls were called Arya, since 2017 in Haute-Garonne.
Another successful saga, in 2008, three little girls were called Hermione, like the young witch from the movies Harry Potter. On the video game side, in 2000, four young girls were called Zelda, like the princess of the famous game. Finally to finish with another princess, in 2017 six received the first name of Vaiana, like the heroine of the Disney film, Moana: The legend at the end of the worldreleased… a year earlier!
Side celebrities: Rihanna, Mika and the arrival of Pio
The celebrities of the music and the world of cinema are not left out either. In 2008 and 2016, seven girls were called Rihanna and there are seven boys named Mika (4 born in 2008 and 3 in 2017). Six Kendrick were also born shortly after the explosion of American rapper Kendrick Lamar.

On the new first name side, Pio, very little used for young boys, has found a certain popularity since 2018 and the discovery for the general French public of Pio Marmaï. Five Kendji (with this spelling) were also born in 2014 in Haute-Garonne, the year Kendji Girac… won The Voice!
