Unusual Finding After Demonstrators Take Over Sri Lanka’s Presidential Palace

Demonstrators managed to ‘occupy’ the Presidential Palace Sri Lanka in Colombo to demand that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resign. Protesters vented their emotions by swimming in the presidential swimming pool.

Reported by AFP, Sunday (10/7/2022) demonstrators stormed the gates of the Presidential Palace. The mob then managed to enter and go to the room of the President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

In addition, there were demonstrators who jumped into the presidential swimming pool. While the rest of the crowd laughed and relaxed in the President’s majestic bedroom, when one of the demonstrators took out underwear that allegedly belonged to Rajapaksa.

When the Presidential Palace was raided by a mob, it was said that Rajakpaksa had fled by ship in the port of Colombo. Rajapaksa said he would resign.

“To ensure a peaceful transition, the president said he would step down on July 13,” parliament speaker Mahinda Abeywardana said in a televised statement.

Demonstrators Find 17.8 Million Rupees Cash

During the action, the demonstrators found $49,000 in cash in the Rajapaksa room. The amount of money is equivalent to 17.8 million Rupees.

“Our struggle is not over,” said Lahiru Weerasekara, a student leader who joined the protest.

“When we broke through the last barrier, we knew the military might fire. We risked our lives,” Lahiru said.

Lahiru stressed that his struggle will not go away as long as Rajapaksa has not retreated. “We won’t give up until he’s really gone,” he said.

Lahiru later said that his party found cash amounting to or 17.8 million Rupees in Rajapaksa’s room. He said the money was immediately handed over to the police.
