No one expected this. The draw for the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup in women’s football resulted this Monday in an unusual duel between two teams from the same club. We talk about the Ajax main team, the current women’s football champion in the Netherlands, and Ajax’s under-19s, who entered the competition after winning the Dutch under-23 title last year.
“It’s a shame to play against our own club. But on the other hand, it’s a great experience for our young girls to face players who are in the quarter-finals of a competition like the Women’s Champions League. It’s a bit of a divided feeling,” he revealed. Anouk Bruil, coach of the Ajax women’s under-19 team.
Ajax’s under-19s are really the ‘underdogs’ of this round, which also features some of the country’s biggest teams, such as Feyenoord, Twente, Fortuna Sittard, Ultrecht, Excelsior and Heerenveen, after having eliminated them in the round Previous Telstar, currently last placed in the 1st division, with a clear 3-0.
After the draw, the club continued to joke about the situation on social media: “We’re going to play against Ajax in the quarter-finals!”, can be read in one of the publications regarding the draw that took place this Monday.
