Unusual Activity of Tiger Sharks Along the Coast of Long Island, New York – Hunting Packs and Multiple Attacks reported

Along the coast of Long Island, in the south of the US state of New York, there is an unusual activity of tiger sharks, leading to the formation of hunting packs, which is not typical for this species of predators.

This is reported Independent.

The incident occurred on July 8, when a 15-year-old surfer off the coast of Fire Island was bitten on the leg by a shark.

The day after this incident, the authorities decided to close the beaches. However, on the same day, the sharks made two more attacks when the predators bit two men over 40 years old.

The ban on swimming will remain in effect on Long Island beaches until they are safe. Local authorities have already allocated funds for the purchase of additional unmanned vehicles and watercraft in order to detect shark activity in a timely manner.

The identified predators that pose a danger off the coast are sand tiger sharks. Their flocks were spotted by drone patrols monitoring water safety off Robert Moses Beach.

According to media reports, about 50 sharks were seen swimming in large schools near the shore. This behavior is atypical for sharks as they usually hunt alone and having large numbers of predators together is rare.

It is also reported that although in this case, sharks managed to attack three people, usually the probability of becoming a victim of these predators is estimated by scientists as extremely low – 1 in 3.7 million.

Previously, Cursor wrote that sharks are starting to make friends, all this in order to better hunt.

In addition, scientists have learned why sharks, being within a centimeter from a person, do not bite him.
