He thought it was a joke. When the craftsmen announced their discovery to him during the restoration of his manor in Plozévet (Finistère), François could not believe his eyes. The discovery in question: a treasure of 239 gold pieces. “I was very incredulous at the start,” he explains to our colleague from France Blue.

Almost two years later, the booty will be auctioned this Wednesday in Angers.

Louis and double louis d’or

“Finding a treasure is something we all dreamed of when we were kids. It can take you back a few years and make your imagination work,” says François.

And what a treasure! Among the 239 pieces, louis and double louis that come from all over France. The Archaeological Service of Rennes estimated that it was the savings of a seventeenth-century merchant.

Between 250,000 and 300,000 euros

“It’s exceptional, already in terms of quantity, at the time it already represented a considerable sum. And also the quality, because these are pieces hidden at the end of the 17th century, the beginning of the 18th century and the later ones are in superb condition “, explains Florian D’Oysonville, the auctioneer in charge of the sale.

The amount of such a treasure? Between 250,000 and 300,000 euros.

François, the owner of the loot, and the three craftsmen who discovered it will share the sum won at the auction.
