The three new land snake species were discovered by a group of scientists led by Alejandro Arteaga, recipient of The Explorers Club Discovery Expeditions and researcher at the Khamai Foundation. The discovery was made official in a study published in the journal ZooKeys.
The discovery of these three new land snake species happened by chance in places where one might not expect to find these animals. The Discovery Ground Snake (Atractus discovery) was found hidden underground in a small cemetery in a remote jungle town in southeast Ecuador.
“Believe it or not, the tomb is also the land of life. In the Andes in Ecuador, they are inhabited by a group of fossil snakes belonging to the genus Atractus, “wrote scienceblog citing SINDOnews, Tuesday (20/9/2022).

Two more new species were discovered next to an old church and in a small school. All this seems to indicate that, at least in the Andes, new snake species are proliferating very well.
Land snakes are the most species snake genus in the world, there are now 150 known species globally, but few people have ever seen or heard of their existence. Three new species of snakes, small, cylindrical and somewhat ancient looking, are named in honor of institutions or people who support the exploration and conservation of remote forests in the tropics.
