Untold: Johnny Football – A Critique of the Documentary and its Impact

content/criticism

Johnny Manziel experienced the year of his life in 2012. Not only has he won the Manning Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, not only has he competed in the Heisman Trophy race, among others Manti Te’o (Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist) prevail – he also won all these awards as the first freshman ever. The young man, nicknamed Johnny Football, felt invincible, and it wasn’t just on the field that he found confirmation. However, sudden success does not do a young brain any good, especially not in these proportions. The fact that his first offense was only punished by a half-game ban didn’t teach him a lesson to get him back on track either…

As the Untoldseries in August 2021 with Untold: Malice at the Palace at Netflix started, so over the next few parts the impression arose that the documentaries would deal with insufficiently illuminated topics from the world of sports – as the title already implied. Until finally Untold: The Race of the Century, the last part of the series to be published in 2022, this concept was largely adhered to. Even with more well-known topics added Untold always added something to the individual documentaries, such as previously unpublished material or exclusive interviews, which offered added value.

Well known

In 2023 there will be supplies again for Untold. Two parts are out now, with two more due out later this month. At half-time, one can’t help but get the impression that this isn’t a direct sequel to the series, but a spin-off. As well as Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child as well as Untold: Johnny Football both appear as if they are part of one Told-Row. Anyone who has dealt with football outside of the USA will hardly have known about Johnny Manziel. Inside the US, the matter will be much better known, even among people who are not particularly football savvy.

Manziel and people around him do speak up and comment on the events of the time, but they hardly contribute anything of substance. Untold: Johnny Football is undoubtedly a competently prepared documentation, but hardly as Untold– Identify the post if identifiers such as the title were removed. Anyone who has never come into contact with the name Johnny Manziel will of course be presented with a lot of “untold” things, in that sense Untold however never understood in the first nine parts. As an episode of unsportsmanlike would have been better suited here.
