From Saturday, October 30th to Sunday, October 1st, atmospheric conditions will be extremely unstable from western Japan to northern Japan due to the effects of low pressure and fronts. Be careful of lightning, tornadoes, strong wind gusts, and localized heavy rain.
Saturday and Sunday: Widespread atmospheric conditions became extremely unstable.
A front will pass from western Japan to eastern Japan from Saturday, October 30th to Sunday, October 1st. A low-pressure system accompanied by another front is expected to develop and move from the northern Sea of Japan to north of Hokkaido, and the front is expected to pass through northern Japan. Warm, humid air will flow towards low pressure and fronts, while cold air with temperatures below -6℃ will flow into the air at about 6,000 meters above western and eastern Japan, and cold air with temperatures below -15℃ will flow into the air at about 5,500 meters above northern Japan. As a result, atmospheric conditions are expected to become extremely unstable over a wide area from western Japan to northern Japan.
30th (Sat) In the afternoon, rain and thunderstorms, including heavy rain, mainly on the Sea of Japan side.
On Saturday the 30th, there will be rain and thunderstorms from the evening on the Japan Sea side from Kyushu to Tohoku. Rain clouds and thunderclouds are expected to form in places in the afternoon on the Pacific coast from Kyushu to Tohoku. Hokkaido will also experience rain and thunderstorms at night, mainly along the Sea of Japan side. In Shikoku, Kinki, Tokai, and Hokkaido, it is likely that there will be localized areas where it will rain so heavily that it will feel like an overturned bucket. Please be careful of flooding on low-lying roads such as underpasses. You should also be careful of strong wind gusts such as lightning strikes and tornadoes.
The maximum temperature will be over 30 degrees Celsius from Kyushu to the Tokai region, and the harsh lingering heat will continue. Please be careful of heat stroke. The temperature in Kanto and Hokuriku is around 28 degrees Celsius, and it looks like it’s going to be humid. In Tohoku and Hokkaido, the temperature will be around 22℃, so it won’t be hot.
October 1st (Sunday) Rain and thunderstorms mainly in the morning
On October 1st (Sunday), there will be rain and thunderstorms in places, with locally heavy rain falling in Kyushu, Chugoku, and Shikoku until dawn, in the Kinki region until morning, and in the Tokai region until around noon. It is expected to be sunny during the day. From Hokuriku to Hokkaido on the Sea of Japan side, the rain will come and go throughout the day, and the rain may become heavier with thunder. Sunshine will reach the Kanto region, but there will be rain clouds and thunderclouds in places. There will be rain and thunderstorms on the Pacific side of Tohoku until the morning, and on the Pacific side of Hokkaido until around noon.
The maximum temperature will rise to around 30 degrees Celsius from Kyushu to Kanto, and it is likely to be a severe lingering summer. Temperatures in Hokuriku and Tohoku will be around 27 degrees Celsius, above normal. The temperature in Hokkaido is likely to be around 22℃.
Signs of approaching thunderclouds, what should you do?
When you’re outside, there’s an easy way to tell if thunderclouds are approaching. There are three signs that thunderclouds are approaching. “Pitch black clouds are approaching” “I hear the rumbling of thunder” “A cold wind suddenly blows”. If you feel these changes, there is a risk that heavy rain or thunder may occur soon, so please evacuate to a safe place immediately.
When a thundercloud approaches, a good place to take shelter is in a nearby sturdy building or inside your car. Taking shelter from the rain under a tree is dangerous because lightning that strikes the tree can jump to people. In the unlikely event that there is no place to evacuate nearby, crouch down with your feet together, head bowed, and cover your ears with both hands.
Severe phenomena caused by isolated thunderclouds often subside after about 30 minutes to an hour. Wait for the thunderclouds to pass in a safe place while checking the latest information such as checking the rain cloud radar on your smartphone.
What is heavy rain?
Heavy rain refers to rain with an hourly rainfall of more than 30 mm and less than 50 mm. This is an image of rain falling like an overturned bucket. Also, you can get wet even with an umbrella, and about half of the people sleeping inside a wooden house will notice the rain. Outside, roads become like rivers, and cars driving on highways are at risk of “hydroplaning,” a phenomenon in which a film of water forms between the tires and the road surface, making the brakes ineffective.
In areas where heavy rain is expected, be careful of landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and rising river levels.
