Unsolved Murder Investigation: Potential Diamond Connection in South Africa

The investigation into the murder of Krasimir Kamenov-Kuro in South Africa is at a dead end. Authorities in Cape Town have no suspects in the attack, in which Kamenov, his wife, a bodyguard and a housekeeper were shot dead.

One of the versions that the services worked on a week ago is that behind the order was a deal with uncut diamonds, writes “24 hours – 168 stories”.

It was checked whether Kuro was not involved in the traffic with jewels, because in three executions of Bulgarians years ago, unregulated sales of diamonds were involved.

The other thing that has forced the investigation to go in this direction is the fact that after every attempt on an underworld person in the Republic of South Africa, the authorities necessarily look for a diamond connection. Government figures indicate that the majority of the victims were part of a gem-trafficking network.

The curious thing is that hardened criminals who have been wanted for years for drug dealing, contract killings, robberies, playing cards or defrauding millions, are only shot when they enter into a scheme to buy or sell diamonds.

Curro was also checked, but no evidence was found in this direction.

There are serious doubts about the 43-year-old businessman George Mihalevich, husband of “Miss Bulgaria” Nataliya Gurkova, who was shot in September 2018 in Bedfordview while returning home in his car. Authorities immediately suspected that behind the bloody attack was a dispute over platinum and gold, because he owns the companies Sandton Gold, Diamond Exchange and Salon Prive.

During his lifetime, George’s name has been associated more than once with people who develop business in the field of mining rare minerals. Among those mentioned are a man named Juan Mayer, who in South Africa is said to be from the so-called “golden bosses”, as well as Chris Kouremetis, known by his nickname “Mr. Big” – killed in 2011 by an unknown a man who shot a total of 18 bullets into his body. Kouremetis, 35, who is Brazilian by nationality, was known to run one of the largest illegal gold trading organizations in the republic. He was also known as the owner of the most properties among the underground bosses there.

After George’s death, a South African coroner told the court he had evidence suggesting Mihalevich bought back Rolexes and other expensive watches stolen in kidnappings, mansion break-ins and cars. This was one of the crimes he was suspected of.
