Yesterday (3rd) was the warmest day on record in Hokkaido, but today (4th) the temperature has completely changed and the highest temperature has returned to normal, and the north wind has started to feel cold. Tomorrow (the 5th) morning is likely to be the lowest temperature of the season in some places. It will be sunny during the day, but high temperatures will be similar to today. It’s expected to be chilly despite the sunshine.
Temperature changes that can make you feel unwell
Yesterday, the temperature rose to 24.0℃ in Hokuto in the Oshima region, breaking the previous highest temperature in November in Hokkaido, which was 23.5℃ in Obihiro for the first time in 83 years. Other areas also experienced unseasonably high temperatures, with approximately 60 of the 174 AMeDAS locations in Hokkaido recording the highest temperatures for November (7 of which were records in Thailand).
However, as the cold front passes, the warm air is replaced by the normal air for this time of year, and today the maximum temperature has returned to normal. By 3:00 p.m., the maximum temperature was widely around 12 degrees Celsius, and at the 64 AMeDAS locations where temperatures were observed, the maximum temperature was less than 10 degrees Celsius. There were many places where the temperature was observed in the early morning and hardly rose during the day, and even at the locations shown in the top image, the temperature remained at around 5℃ in Wakkanai and around 8℃ in Abashiri during the day. The difference in maximum temperature from yesterday was generally about 10℃, a change in temperature that would make you feel sick.
Tomorrow morning, some places will set a new record for this season’s lowest temperature.
Tomorrow morning’s minimum temperature is expected to be around normal or about 3°C lower than normal mainly in inland areas. As the weather will clear up tonight and into tomorrow morning, the radiative cooling phenomenon is likely to intensify. Temperatures will drop mainly in inland areas, with temperatures reaching 2 degrees Celsius in Sapporo and -3 degrees Celsius in Asahikawa, potentially setting new records for this season. Please stay warm when you go to bed tonight.
Maximum temperatures tomorrow are expected to remain at normal levels. The winds that were blowing a little strong will subside tomorrow, but it may still feel chilly despite the sunshine.
What is radiation cooling phenomenon?
During this period, when the skies clear from night to morning, the “radiative cooling phenomenon” intensifies, causing the temperature to drop dramatically.
“Radiative cooling” is a phenomenon in which something cools down by emitting heat to the outside.
For example, some of you may have had the experience of sleeping on a cold night with your futon tightly covered and staying warm until the morning, but instead sleeping without covering yourself with the futon and feeling cold.
Same as in this case, if the weather is cloudy from night to morning, the clouds will act like a blanket, making it difficult for heat near the ground to escape to the sky, making it less cold. On the other hand, when the wind is weak and the weather is sunny, there are no clouds to act as a blanket, so the heat near the ground escapes into the sky, making it colder.
When the forecast predicts that the radiation cooling phenomenon will intensify, the weather will become colder from night to morning. Please stay warm and have a good time.
