UNRWA spokeswoman Juliette Touma said in a statement to Agence France-Presse, “It is shameful for a member state of the United Nations to work to dismantle a United Nations organization that is also the largest responder in humanitarian operations in Gaza.”
Touma said, “If this decision is implemented, it will be a disaster, including its possible impact on humanitarian activities in Gaza and in several parts of the West Bank. “
She emphasized that the organization is the main provider of “shelter, food and primary health care” in Gaza.
For his part, UNRWA media adviser Adnan Abu Hasna said that Israel‘s decision to prevent the organization from working inside Israel means that the entire humanitarian relief work has collapsed.
Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s High Commissioner, described Israel’s ban on the organization’s activities inside Israel as “only deepening the suffering of the Palestinians, especially in Gaza.”
The Israeli parliament passed a law banning UNRWA from working in Israel and East Jerusalem, despite the protest of the United States.
Delegates approved the project by a majority of 92 votes to 10 against, after years of sharp Israeli criticism of UNRWA, which has escalated since the start of the war in Gaza following a Hamas attack on it October 7 last year.
